- Scott, Tony
- b. 1944, Stockton-on-TeesFilm-makerTony Scott is one of a number of British directors who have achieved high-profile Hollywood careers. After leaving the Royal College of Art, he joined his brother Ridley Scott in directing commercials and television movies. His first Hollywood film was the vampire movie The Hunger (1983), a box office failure which nevertheless bore the hallmarks—a slick visual style—of later mainstream success. In Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop II, Scott made the topgrossing films in 1986 and 1987, respectively. With The Last Boy Scout (1991) and Crimson Tide (1995) he failed to repeat the same level of commercial success, despite working with some of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. In 1993 he made the acclaimed True Romance, a violent noirish thriller scripted by Quentin Tarantino.MATTHEW GRICE
